2013 was an outstanding year for wine grapes. The telltale russet color of the Gewürztraminer developed on the skins shortly before our harvest date and the flavors and aromatics had us excited from the moment the fruit hit the press.
The elegance of the fruit and the lack of overwhelming tannins makes this fruit somewhat of a rarity in the Alexander Valley where we often grow intensely rich and full-bodied wines, this reserved style will open up beautifully when either aged or decanted to reveal layers of fruit and spice
Red and black fruits mingle in this wine making it a berry compote of a Merlot. Blackberry and raspberry flavors dominate and pair beautifully with notes of plum jam. Earthy accents of sage and roasted coffee beans add interest and complexity to the abundant fruit.
Our vineyard source is located in the middle of the Alexander Valley where warm afternoons allow for complete ripening and resolution of otherwise enormous tannins in the vineyard. The benchland site offers the best of viticultural conditions with well-drained, modest soils that allow for a healthy canopy and moderately sized crop; both key indicators of the prized ‘balance’ we seek as winemakers.
This is the sixth vintage of this wine since we returned to an Alexander Valley appellation on our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Individual lots of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from select hillside vineyards, primarily from the central and northern, warmer areas of the valley, form the core of this wine’s character. Limited in production, this wine exhibits the hallmarks of classic Alexander Valley Cabernet:
Lively acidity in the grapes from our vineyard in Russian River Valley and the slow, steady temperatures of the growing season, led to the development of complex flavors and aromas in our Late Harvest Riesling. 375 ml
